Thomas R. Cantwell, Jr.
President and Director
Thomas “Tim” R. Cantwell, Jr. is President and Director of Cantwell-Anderson, Inc. (CAI), the parent company of Cloudbreak Development. Mr. Cantwell is a Licensed General Contractor, and since 1979 has successfully directed the company in developing and managing its more than $500 million in assets. Nearly $100 million of the company’s development projects have been for sale and rental housing targeted to low-income households.
Under Cantwell’s guidance, the group of companies now known as Cloudbreak Development began in 1993 working to meet the needs of the growing number of homeless individuals and families across the country, primarily targeting the needs of U.S. Military Veterans. That same year, work began on the first of these facilities, a former college dormitory near LAX in Inglewood, Calif., converted to offer 500 beds of affordable transitional housing to homeless veterans. With an onsite mental health clinic, job development programs, an adult school and other support services, the Westside Residence Hall became the model for Cloudbreak’s future ventures. Today, Cloudbreak offers nearly 3,000 beds or housing units for formerly homeless veterans across the country, with nearly 700 permanent housing units and 160 program beds currently under development.
Mr. Cantwell served as the Acting Executive Director of Los Angeles Veterans Initiative (subsequently renamed United States Veterans Initiative, or USVI) for a three-year formative period from October of 1993 through September of 1996. Today, the annual budget of Veterans Initiative is well over $20 million, and the organization is the country’s largest and recognized as one of the best homeless veteran service providers.
Since 1994, Cantwell has served on the Board of Directors of the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, whose mission is to end homelessness among veterans by shaping public policy, promoting collaboration, and building the capacity of service providers nationwide. For six years he served as President of this Board, helping to rebuild the struggling organization and provide sound fiscal oversight and commitment to purpose that helped it become today’s recognized leader in the field of advocacy for homeless veterans.
Tim is married to Stephani Hardy who left USVI as its first CEO after 15 years with the company, and currently serves on several Boards including the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
