Highlights of NHC’s 75 Years – Landmark Legislation
- Soon after the founding of NHC in 1931, the Federal Housing Administration is created in 1934 and the first National Housing Act is passed in 1937.
- NHC led the fight for the passage of the Housing Act of 1949, the most ambitious housing and urban renewal legislation Congress has ever enacted.
- A major NHC objective is achieved with the creation in 1965 of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which is quickly followed by legislation including rent supplements, the expansion of public housing and the Fair Housing Act.
- NHC fulfills another policy objective when the Community Reinvestment Act, or CRA, is passed into law in 1977, helping to ensure community development and homeownership opportunities for underserved populations.
