Green Affordable Housing: How to Grow It In Your Community

Friday, June 6, 2008
9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

National Association of Home Builders
1201 15th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005

The National Housing Conference was please to partner with the National Association of Home Builders to bring together the leaders in the field of green housing to talk about the national policy issues and the local challenges of creating and preserving affordable green housing. Panelists discussed the applicability of green building to affordable and workforce homes, the differences between new and rehabilitated units, the effects on residents, sources of capital, and national and local policy implications.

Topic 1: State of the Nation’s Green Housing Policies

Panelists:

The housing industry is focusing its attention on the green building movement. What changes are afoot in the housing industry to construct and rehabilitate green houses and multifamily buildings? What are the implications of federal, state and local incentives and mandates for decent, safe, affordable homes for all Americans? This panel will provide an overview of recent relevant policy and pending legislation in this area, consequences of public interventions, and implications of green building on future housing policy.

Topic 2: Adding Affordability to the Equation: Green Housing in Practice

Panelists:

Green building creates healthier and more energy- and cost-efficient housing. How can green building be developed so that it is affordable to low-and moderate-income families? How does integrated design play a role? Is green rehabilitation of existing affordable housing viable? In addition to addressing these questions, the panels discussed the most recent data on the “green” performance of our housing stock, case studies of affordable housing projects, and issues of design, transit accessibility, and other factors in creating truly affordable green housing.
