Closing the Black Homeownership Gap
The Black homeownership rate remains persistently lower than the country’s overall homeownership rate – a stark reminder of progress that must be made to fulfill the mission of the Fair Housing Act, 50 years after its passage. There is a clear need for immediate action to ensure Black households have equal access to homeownership and its many financial and social benefits. This panel of experts will explore opportunities to increase Black homeownership and discuss NHC’s Black Homeownership Working Group’s initiatives.

Addressing the Affordable Rental Crisis
Although COVID-19 has redefined rental markets, the need for affordable rental options across the income spectrum remains. Tight inventory and new construction focused on rental units for high-income households continue to squeeze low- to-moderate income households as the share of cost-burdened renters increases. Better investment in affordable rental units must be a priority for policymakers at every level of government, especially with the economy in recession and many households still reeling from the financial aftermath of the pandemic. Hear from the housing organizations working to address this mounting crisis.

The Future of the Community Reinvestment Act
CRA was passed in 1977 to encourage banks to better serve low-income communities, yet many agree the law fell short of its original promise, prompting regulators to reimagine a modernized version of this landmark statute. In the spring, however, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency broke from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Federal Reserve to propose disruptive changes to CRA this year. NHC joined many housing organizations in opposition to the proposal, arguing it goes against the intent of the original legislation and only adds to the confusion it sought to resolve. Hear from regulators and industry stakeholders about the challenges the current proposal and the disjointed rulemaking approach pose to financial institutions charged with implementing new changes and upholding the mission of CRA.

But is this environment ripe with opportunity? Could innovative policy solutions be the answer to unlocking economic opportunity in this housing supply crisis? A Renewed Agenda to End Homelessness
Going into 2020, the homelessness crisis appeared to be worsening, particularly in densely populated urban centers. The lack of affordable housing opportunities and unprecedently tight rental and housing markets have jeopardized the ability for low-income individuals and families to secure safe housing. COVID-19 has only deepened this crisis, adding historic unemployment on top of an existing homeless population of more than half of million. With another quarter of a million new people at risk of becoming homeless because of the pandemic, this panel of homeless service providers and advocates will explain what can be done to serve those most in need.
